Hare Moon Ritual: Banishing Negativity with Roses[credits]

by Gwydion & Freya

This full moon circle ritual was written for the May full moon in the year 2000 -- the Hare moon. It is presented here as inspiration and raw material to others creating ritual circles. -Gwydion

This circle is designed for banishing negativity from the participant's life in a rather nice way that combines all elements, physical preparation and completion. We found it very beautiful.

You need (in addition to the usual tools): sea salt, frankincense, rose petals, rose buds, an oil infusion with cloves, basil, clover, cumin, frankincense, lilac, mint, and rosemary. This is "banishing oil" and should be created like any other oil infusion / potion. You will need one or more floating candles and a large ornate bowl. You may want to choose some very soothing music (without words) to play in the background.

Welcome and Dedication

[You should make your own dedication customized to the purpose of your ritual].

Consecration

Walk deosil around the circle with water and sea salt, distributing droplets of the mixture as you go. Repeat "With water and earth intermingling and strengthening, I hereby purify this scared space for the performance of our magick.

Walk deosil around the circle with burning frankincense. Repeat "With Fire and Air intermingling and strengthening, I hereby consecrate and sanctify this sacred space for the performance of our magick."

Casting the Circle

Raise the energy using your atheme, sword, wand or staff with 3 circles clockwise, saying:

  • "All working and everything contained within this circle will be safe and protected from all energies that may come to do us harm."
  • "I ask that only the most correct and beneficial astrological influences join us in our magick."
  • "I cast this circle for us to perform our magick this evening. The circle is now cast, so mote it be!"

Say "The circle is now cast. No one may leave without permission."

Calling the Quarters

East: (Visualizing yellow light coming into your left hand) Say "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the East. I do summon you to witness our right and guard this circle. Powers of Air, move thy cool essence about us as we journey between the worlds. We welcome you."

South: (red light) "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the South. I do summon you to witness our right and guard this circle. Powers of Fire, bring thy illuminating essence as we journey between the worlds. We welcome you."

West: (blue light) "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the West. I do summon you to witness our right and guard this circle. Powers of Water, give us thy cleansing essence as we journey between the worlds. We welcome you."

North: (green light) "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the North. I do summon you to witness our right and guard this circle. Powers of Earth, bring us thy nourishing and grounding essence as we journey between the worlds. We welcome you."

Spirits: (at the Altar) "I call upon the Ancient Ones to witness this right and guard this circle. I ask that only the most correct and beneficial energies join us in the magick we are about to perform."

Power Chant

All say "As above, so below. As within, so without. As the universe, so the soul."

Invoking the God and Goddess

Say "Great and Powerful God, He of countless visages, masculine incarnation of the All, we request your presence. Lend us your strength in our magick. We await you."

Say "Sublime and powerful Goddess, She of countless visages, All Mother, feminine incarnation of the All, we request your presence. On this sacred night of the Full Moon, when the energies are right, lend us your strength in our magick. We await you."

Working of Magick

Prepare: rose petals, bowl with sea salted water, oil infusion with cloves, basil, clover, cumin, frankincense, lilac, mint, and rosemary. In the bowl, add sea salt to the water. Place one or more floating candles and add a couple of rose buds. In a smaller bowl, pour the oil infusion.

Everybody chooses one rose petal in turn. As each dips it into the oil infusion, they mentally infuse it with the essence of that which they want to banish from their life. Each then places their rose petal in the bowl of salt water.

After everybody places their petals into the water, light the floating in a bowl candle(s) and pass the purifying incenses (frankincense) over the bowl three times counter clockwise, saying: "Let our thoughts and deeds be grounded as the Earth, wise as the Water, informed as the Air, and powerful as the Fire. May the God and Goddess aid us in letting negativity float away from our lives as the rose petals will float away in the river."

At this point you can do a chant or a visualization to reinforce the intention.

Next you can optionally have cakes and ale: raise them up in turn to the God and Goddess, visualizing healing light infusing them. Then pass them around the circle. Anything unconsumed must be buried alter the circle.

Dismiss the God and Goddess

"Great and beautiful Goddess of the trinity, mother of all tonight. We thank thee for thy presence and assistance in this rite. May peace and love remain always between us."

"Great and powerful God, protector and father of all tonight. We thank thee for thy presence and assistance in this rite. May peace and love remain always between us."

Dismissing the Elements

With your Right Hand.

Spirits: (at the altar) "Powers seen and unseen, the Ancient Ones, we thank thee for thy presence at this right. May peace and harmony be always between us. Hale and farewell."

North: (Visualize green light flowing from your hand) "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the North. We thank thee for attending this right and guarding our circle. Powers of Earth, we thank thee for thy nourishing and grounding essence as we journeyed between the worlds. Hale and farewell."

West: (blue light) "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the West. We thank thee for witnessing our right and guarding our circle. Powers of Water, we thank thee for thy cleansing essence as we journeyed between the worlds. Hale and farewell."

East: (yellow light) "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the East. We thank thee for attending this right and guarding our circle. Powers of Air, we thank thee for thy cool essence as we journeyed between the worlds. Hale and farewell."

South: (red light) "Hale Guardians of the Watchtower of the South. We thank for witnessing this right and guarding our circle. Powers of Fire, we thank thee for thy illuminating essence as we journeyed between the worlds. Hale and farewell."

Closing the circle

Make 3 circles counter clockwise with your tool of choice, saying: "The circle has ended. Remember, the circle is broken, but never undone. Always a circle, may its magickal power continue to flow within us. You may draw upon its energy whenever it is needed."

Bang your tool on the alter 3 times, then say "Marry me meet, marry we part, marry we meet again."

Afterwards

Take the bowl of rose petals and pour entire contents into a river or ocean. Visualize the negativity being washed away with the petals (it's ok -- everything is natural and biodegradable).

Bury and unconsumed cakes and ale.
