Aethusa cynapium[credits]

by Anja Heij

This is fool's parsley, a plant you'd better not consume. The Latin name is derived from the Arab word 'ai' what means burning, since the plant causes burning pains.

The homoeopathic Aethusa mainly cures complaints with the nervous system and the digestion. Aethusa symptoms are violent and intense. Think of this remedy in cases of cholera infantum and difficult dentition: severe vomiting and diarrhoa in children, the defaecation is yellowish-green and slimy and the child is very weak and exhausted after throwing up. The child experiences severe burning pains, high fever with raving and excitement, and sleepiness and confusion afterwards. The child is frightened, restless and easily crying. It absolutely cannot tolerate milk, which will be thrown up immediately. Other food will be thrown up within an hour in undigested white or cheesy yellowish substances.

This symptom image often occurs during hot summer weather or the heat of the night. It fits children and grown-ups who constantly eat or drink; at a certain moment their digestion simply stops working. Another background is indigestion due to problems with the brains. In that case the symptoms are a hot head, perspiration, vomiting, exhaustion, sleepiness, possibly together with epileptic spasms, eyes turned upwards, clenched thumbs, prostration, foam at the mouth and dilated pupils.

Grown-ups who need this remedy are persons with strong and intense emotions, but they don't easily show them. They work through their emotions during sleep; this causes sleepwalking and a very deep sleep. Aethusa characters fear that they will not wake up from this deep sleep. (Aethusa can also be helpful in case of fear of not waking up after an operation). These people feel a great love for animals. In contact with humans they can be very irritated.

They like cheese and pastas, salt food. They dislike fruits.

Aethusa's are afraid of darkness. They feel worse by heat, milk, 3-4 o'oclock at night, after eating or drinking. They feel better in open air.
